How to Diagnose Recirculation in Your ECMO Circuit. TCD: Protecting the Brain

Welcome back to Day 2 of PerfWeb 86! We are excited to present an enriching webinar that delves into two crucial aspects of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Led by the esteemed perfusionist, Joe Basha, CCP, this session will focus on "How to Diagnose Recirculation in Your ECMO Circuit" and "Transcranial Doppler (TCD): Protecting the Brain."

**Webinar Topics:**

1. **Diagnosing Recirculation in Your ECMO Circuit:** Recirculation is a critical concern in veno-venous (V-V) ECMO circuits and can have a significant impact on patient outcomes. In this segment, Joe Basha will explore the various potential causes of recirculation in V-V ECMO, including cannula placement, circuit configuration, and blood flow dynamics. He will then delve into the methods and techniques for accurately diagnosing the degree and clinical significance of recirculation. Participants will gain valuable insights into troubleshooting and optimizing ECMO circuits to minimize recirculation and improve overall circuit efficiency.

2. **Transcranial Doppler (TCD): Protecting the Brain:** The brain's protection is of utmost importance during CPB, as cerebral complications can have severe consequences for patients. Joe Basha will introduce the concept of Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and its role in monitoring cerebral blood flow and detecting potential issues in the brain during cardiopulmonary bypass. Participants will learn about the importance of continuous TCD monitoring, its interpretation, and its relevance in guiding clinical decision-making to safeguard the brain and enhance patient outcomes.

As a unique and immersive learning experience, this webinar includes a simulation component where participants will engage with an ECMO simulator. This hands-on experience will allow attendees to observe firsthand how recirculation can occur in V-V ECMO circuits for various reasons. Through the simulation, participants will gain practical insights into identifying recirculation and implementing strategies to address it effectively.
