Day 1 - Overview
Adult ECMO Specialist Training Course: Didactic Day 1

The Adult ECMO Specialist Training Course begins with a focused didactic day designed to deepen the knowledge of healthcare professionals, including perfusionists, nurses, physician assistants, and physicians, in Adult Veno-Arterial (V-A) and Veno-Venous (V-V) ECMO. This session, part of the comprehensive course offering, is delivered live online, emphasizing interaction and personalized learning with a cap of 16 participants to ensure quality engagement.

The day's journey starts at 8:00 AM with introductions, setting the stage with course instructions, expectations, and a review of the day's objectives and schedule. This initial segment is crucial for establishing a foundation for the day's learning experiences.

From 8:30 to 9:30 AM, participants delve into anticoagulation management on ECMO, exploring key aspects such as heparin usage, Direct Thrombin Inhibitors (DTIs), monitoring strategies, blood transfusions, and managing complications. This session is particularly relevant for understanding the complexities of maintaining optimal anticoagulation levels in ECMO patients.

The following hour, 9:30 to 10:30 AM, shifts focus to the impact of ECMO on pharmacokinetics, including medication sequestration, dosing adjustments, and clearance issues. This part of the course is designed to enhance the participant's ability to manage patient medication effectively during ECMO support.

A comprehensive overview of ECMO, including its history, current applications, and future trends, occupies the 10:30 to 11:30 AM slot. This session broadens participants' understanding of ECMO's role in critical care and its evolution over the years.

Before breaking for lunch, the morning concludes with an in-depth discussion on the ECMO circuit from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. This segment covers the components, design principles, and cannulation strategies essential for the safe and effective operation of ECMO systems.

The afternoon sessions, resuming at 1:00 PM, cover a range of critical topics including gas exchange dynamics, respiratory failure and ARDS, patient management on VV ECMO, and circuit management strategies. These discussions are designed to equip participants with a deeper understanding of the physiological challenges in critically ill patients and the practical aspects of managing ECMO circuits and patient care.

Each session employs a blend of lecture/discussion, audiovisuals, and question/answer formats to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. The faculty, composed of leading professionals across multiple disciplines, offers rich insights and practical knowledge.

The day's agenda is meticulously structured to provide participants with a foundational understanding of ECMO, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve patient outcomes in their respective roles.

Day 2 - Overview
Adult ECMO Specialist Training Course: Didactic Day 2

Building on the foundational knowledge from Day 1, the second day of the Adult ECMO Specialist Training Course covers advanced topics crucial for a comprehensive understanding of ECMO management. This day is structured to further enrich the knowledge base of healthcare professionals involved in ECMO care, addressing both technical and clinical aspects of ECMO support.

The day begins with an exploration of monitoring circuit pressures at 8:00 AM, focusing on identifying and managing circuit dynamics and abnormalities. This session is key for maintaining ECMO circuit integrity and ensuring patient safety.

Cannulation techniques are discussed from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, highlighting VV and VA configurations and special considerations. This technical workshop is essential for those directly involved in the ECMO initiation process, offering practical insights into optimal cannulation strategies.

Cardiac pathologies leading to ECMO support are covered from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. This discussion provides crucial criteria for ECMO support, addressing pre and post-operative considerations and highlighting patient selection nuances.

The initiation of ECMO, including priming, patient preparation, and initial settings, is thoroughly explored from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This comprehensive overview is critical for ensuring a seamless transition to ECMO support.

Afternoon sessions, starting at 1:00 PM post-lunch, delve into VA ECMO management, ECPR and transport logistics, and the integration of CRRT with ECMO. These advanced topics emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of ECMO care, highlighting the collaboration required among healthcare teams.

The day concludes with a focus on patient emergencies on ECMO, equipping participants with the knowledge to manage bleeding, cardiac arrest, and other critical situations effectively.

Employing interactive lecture formats, discussions, and Q&A sessions, Day 2 of the course ensures participants are well-prepared to tackle complex challenges in ECMO management, enhancing their ability to contribute effectively to patient care teams in various healthcare settings.
